Welcome to Challenge A!
Classical Conversations has narrowed down the theme of each Challenge level. They are as follows:
Challenge A: ownership
Challenge B: discipline
Challenge 1: freedom
Challenge 2: choices
Challenge 3: consequences
Challenge 4: leadership
So Challenge A, the first year of the dialectic stage, is a new stage in classical education. Students (most of them) have worked through the grammar stage in science, Latin, math, English, geography, history, and timeline. Now they take more OWNERSHIP of their studies and begin to learn how to work out their daily schedules with less supervision. We take one hour of community day per week to dive in-depth into learning six different skills using six different subjects.
The skill of grammar is learned by studying Latin.
The skill of writing is learned by reading children's literature, discussing in class, and practicing the canons of Invention, Arrangement, and Elocution as explained in the Lost Tools of Writing.
The skill of debate is learned by studying world geography.
The skill of rhetoric is learned by studying apologetics/creation.
The skill of research is learned by studying biology.
The skill of logic is learned by studying Saxon 8/7 and its many pre-algebra concepts.
Students grow so much during this first year of Challenge and really learn how to have a dialectic discussion. It is so much fun to participate in as a student, parent, and tutor!
